According to the latest situation report from the WHO African regional office, the geographical expansion of the Sudan Ebolavirus (SUDV) to urban settings in the Republic of Uganda has elevated the local risk level from high to very high.

And the risk to the African region has increased from low to high, while the global risk level remains low.

The WHO confirmed that the case fatality rate among lab-confirmed SUDV cases is about 27%.

As of October 29, 2022, Situation Report #38 indicated 128 confirmed SUDV cases and 34 related fatalities since mid-September 2022.

Furthermore, recent reports indicate the case totals have already increased.

Without licensed vaccines and therapeutics for the prevention and treatment of Sudan virus disease, the risk of potential serious public health impact is high.

Three SUDV candidate vaccines under consideration by the WHO are cAd3, cAdOX1, and rVSV SUDV GP. The clinical study protocols for these vaccines are under review by committees in Uganda.

To alert people of potential health risks, the U.S. Embassy in Kampala issued a Health Update advising people to defer non-essential travel to Mubende and Kassanda districts in Uganda.

And the U.S. CDC updated its Level 2 advisory on October 26, 2022.
