Canada’s Prime Minister announced the first clinical trial of a potential COVID-19 disease prevention vaccine, called Ad5-nCoV COVID-19, has been approved by Health Canada.

While visiting Rideau Cottage, PM Trudeau said on May 16, 2020, ‘the vaccine will be produced “here at home” — if the trials are successful.’

This important, phase 1 study will be conducted out of the Canadian Centre for Vaccinology at Dalhousie University, according to Global News.ca.

And, the Canadian National Research Council of Canada will be working with the Ad5-nCoV COVID-19 vaccine manufacturer, a Chinese research team called CanSino Biologics, in order to produce and distribute the vaccine “here at home” — if the clinical trials are successful.

Previously, on May 12, 2020, following priority scientific review, Health Canada authorized the first COVID-19 serological test for use in Canada, the DiaSorin LIAISON.

This means Canadian laboratories will use the test to detect antibodies specific to COVID-19.

Serological testing in Canada will contribute to a better understanding of whether people who have been infected by COVID-19 are immune to the virus.

Further research will also help us fully understand the relationship between positive antibody tests and protection against re-infection.

Under the leadership of Canada’s COVID-19 Immunity Task Force, at least 1 million Canadian blood samples will be collected and tested over the next 2-years as Canada tracks the coronavirus in the general population and in specific groups at greater risk of having been infected, including health care workers and the elderly.

A list of all authorized testing devices is posted on Health Canada’s website. This list includes nucleic acid-based tests, which are used to diagnose an active infection.

As of the afternoon on May 17th, with a population of about 37 million residents, Canada has confirmed 5,781 fatalities related to COVID-19 disease during 2020.

Health Canada is responsible for helping Canadians maintain and improve their health.
