Scientists at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed yesterday they are tracking (45) cases of the monkeypox virus (MPXV) that have been reported by fifteen states and the District of Columbia.

These MPXV patients are primarily located in New York (11) and California (8) as of June 9, 2022.

From an international perspective, the UK Health Security Agency recently confirmed 305 MPXV patients in England.

And local media in Spain reported that the Community of Madrid had recorded a total of 275 positive cases of MPXV, an increase of 25 infections in the last day.

The CDC's website says 'People who may be at higher risk might include but are not limited to those who had contact with someone who had a rash that looked like monkeypox or someone who was diagnosed with confirmed or probable monkeypox.'

The CDC and many countries are offering monkeypox close-contacts the U.S. FDA approved Jynneos® (MVA-BN, IMVANEX) vaccine to prevent future monkeypox infections.

Post-exposure prophylaxis is recommended for contacts of cases, ideally within four days but up to 14 days of first exposure to prevent disease onset.

While pre-exposure prophylaxis is recommended for health workers at high risk of exposure, says the CDC.

Overall, there are about (40) countries reporting 1,522 monkeypox cases as of June 10, 2022.
