Rotavirus Disease Vaccines 2023

As of 2019, four rotavirus vaccines had been prequalified by the World Health Organization (WHO) for use worldwide. Data from currently available products support their effectiveness and impact in diverse settings. As of 2023, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says two rotavirus vaccines are licensed for infants in the United States: RotaTeq® (RV5) and Rotarix® (RV1).

Rotavirus Disease Vaccine Candidates

PATH wrote while the currently available live, oral rotavirus vaccines are safe, effective, and making a huge impact where they have been introduced, they don’t perform as well in the countries that need them the most. For example, data suggest that the efficacy of these vaccines is around 50 percent in Asian and African countries that experience the highest burden, compared to over 85 percent in places like the United States and Western Europe.

The trivalent P2-VP8 Injectable vaccine candidate is being evaluated in clinical trials in Ghana, Malawi, and Zambia.
