The U.S. CDC reported today the seasonal influenza vaccination for the 2021-2022 flu season in the U.S. did not reduce the risk for outpatient respiratory illness caused by influenza A(H3N2) viruses that have dominated.

Overall, vaccine effectiveness against medically attended outpatient acute respiratory infection associated with the influenza A(H3N2) virus was 16%, which was considered not statistically significant.

The good news is the CDC has confirmed very few influenza cases this season.

The evolution of circulating flu viruses requires frequent updates to the composition of influenza vaccines says the CDC.

However, predicting virus subtypes and predominant clades within subtypes is a significant, yearly challenge for pharmaceutical companies.
