Monkeypox Disease

Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus, says the U.S. CDC. Monkeypox virus (MPXV) is part of the same family of viruses as the variola virus that causes smallpox.

Monkeypox was discovered when outbreaks of a pox-like disease occurred in colonies of monkeys kept for research. Despite being named “monkeypox,” the source of the disease remains unknown.

However, African rodents and non-human primates (like monkeys) might harbor the virus and infect people.

Monkeypox Symptoms

Monkeypox symptoms are similar to smallpox symptoms but milder, and monkeypox is rarely fatal. Monkeypox is not related to chickenpox.

Monkeypox And Children

The AP reported on July 22, 2022, two children in the USA had been diagnosed with monkeypox. In Europe, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control reported at the end of June 2022, that a male child younger than ten years without relevant medical history presented at a pediatric emergency room in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, infected with the MPXV.
