7 High-Level Travel Advisories Issued in February 2019

The US State Department issued Travel Advisories for Yemen, Haiti, Afganistan, Turkey, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, and Pakistan between February 5 and 14, 2019. 

The State Department says the first step when planning any trip abroad is to check the Travel Advisories for your intended destination because conditions can change rapidly in a country at any time.

And, the State Department says to pay special attention to their safety and security information and assess for yourself the risk of traveling to a particular country or region. 

Some U.S. citizens with special considerations – such as students, women, and LGBTI travelers – may face additional challenges when traveling abroad. If you do decide to travel, make a plan for what to do if something goes wrong overseas.

Level 3 Travel Advisory, Reconsider Travel

On January 15, 2019, the US State Department issued a ‘Worldwide Caution’ with specific recommendations on how to prepare for possible contingencies, receive information on breaking security events and ensure that travelers can be contacted in an emergency. 

International travelers are also urged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive security messages and to make it easier to locate you in an emergency. 

Separately, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issues Travel Alerts, which are designed to inform travelers and clinicians about current health issues related to specific international destinations. 

CDC Travel Alerts may arise from disease outbreaks, special events or gatherings, and natural disasters that may affect travelers’ health. 

Additionally, the CDC says Americans traveling internationally should ensure they are up-to-date on routine vaccinations, such as MMR, DTaP, Varicella, Polio, and a yearly flu shot. 

And, certain international travelers may need hepatitis A, typhoid and yellow fever vaccinations.
