Level 3 Travel Advisory Issued for Honduras

The US State Department issued a Level 3 Travel Advisory on September 20, 2018, for visitors to Honduras due to crime and civil unrest.

This Travel Advisory says future travelers should ‘Reconsider Travel’ to Honduras, due to increased risks.

In related actions, the US State Department issued Level 3 Travel Advisories for the neighboring countries:

• Nicaragua
• Venezuela

Additionally, the State Department says do not travel to the eastern part of Honduras, Gracias a Dios Department.  

Gracias a Dios is an isolated area with high levels of criminal activity and drug trafficking. The local infrastructure is weak, government services are limited, and police and military presence is scarce.

‘The US government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Gracias a Dios as U.S. government employees are restricted from traveling to the area, reported this State Department Advisory.

Previously, on March 12, 2018, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated vaccination recommendations for Honduras visitors.

The CDC says you should be up to date on routine vaccinations while traveling to any destination in Honduras.

These vaccines include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, varicella, polio, and the yearly flu vaccination.

Additionally, the CDC recommends both the hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines because you can get these diseases through contaminated food or water in Honduras, regardless of where you are eating or staying.

Moreover, the Zika virus is an ongoing risk in Honduras.

Which means pregnant women should not travel to Honduras because the Zika virus has been found to cause serious birth defects, says the CDC.
