According to recent reporting by the LoHud, Rockland County, New York health commissioner announced that the county has 12 cases of pertussis, a highly contagious respiratory tract infection. Known as whooping cough, Rockland has had as few as five cases in 2017 and as many as 57 in 2019.

Pertussis is a vaccine-preventable disease. However, vaccination data for 2022 is currently unavailable, reported Nancy Cutler on September 26, 2022.

Just south of Rockland County, Westchester County Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler commented, "While we do not have any cases of pertussis that we are aware of right now, pertussis, or whooping cough, is a contagious bacterial infection that often circulates, and we take it seriously."

"Any schools that learn of a suspected case should contact the health department for assistance following up."

"Any grandparents or other adults who care for infants or young children who are not fully vaccinated should ensure they are up to date on their TDaP vaccine because they can be a source of infection for little ones."

"And, of course, be sure your children keep current with their vaccines too."

The updated U.S. CDC vaccination schedule for children is posted on this weblink.

Furthermore, most clinics and pharmacies in the USA offer pertussis vaccines.

Note: Rockland County has previously reported extensive poliovirus under-vaccinations in children during 2022.
