According to AFP News reporting, the European Commission's Health Emergency and Preparedness Authority (HERA) has begun monkeypox vaccine and treatment purchase negotiations on behalf of 27 nations.

Spokesman Stefan De Keersmaecker told AFP on May 27, 2022, that "HERA is indeed working with the member states and with manufacturers to procure vaccines and therapeutics for monkeypox."

On May 25, 2022, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control reported 118 confirmed monkeypox cases from 12 EU/EEA Member States during May 2022.

Globally, various reports indicate the total number of confirmed/potential cases is about 397.

In the USA, California, Florida, Massachusetts, New York, Utah, Virginia, and Washington have confirmed (9) monkeypox, virus-infected patients.

Monkeypox is a vaccine-preventable viral zoonotic disease, says the World Health Organization.

A new monkeypox vaccine, Jynneos® (MVA-BN, IMVANEX), has been licensed by the U.S. FDA since 2019 to prevent monkeypox and smallpox.

And, because the monkeypox virus is closely related to smallpox, research indicates the ACAM2000® smallpox vaccine may also protect people from monkeypox, says the U.S. CDC.
