The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the Republic of the Philippines and the Russian Direct Investment Fund announced today the single-component Sputnik Light vaccine had been Approved under the emergency use authorization.

The Sputnik Light vaccine is based on human adenovirus serotype 26. In March 2021, the two-dose Sputnik V vaccine was Approved in the Philippines.

Immunization with Sputnik Light will help the Philippines significantly reduce the infection rate in the country and create herd immunity in a short time frame, stated the August 23rd press release.

Sputnik Light has been found safe and highly effective, as demonstrated by the real-world vaccination data in several countries.

In particular, the data from the Ministry of Health of the Buenos Aires province (Argentina) shows 78.6-83.7% efficacy among the elderly. And in Paraguay, Sputnik Light is 93.5% effective during the ongoing vaccination campaign, according to the country’s Ministry of Health.

Studies on the combination of Sputnik Light with other vaccines are ongoing in Argentina, Azerbaijan, UAE and have been Approved in Russia and Belarus.

Separately, the Philippines Department of Health (DOH), the University of the Philippines - Philippine Genome Center, and the University of the Philippines - National Institutes of Health reported on August 23rd the detection of 466 Delta (B.1.617.2) variant cases, 90 Alpha (B.1.1.7) variant cases, 105 Beta (B.1.351) variant cases, and 41 P.3 variant cases in the latest batch of whole-genome sequencing.

The Philippines DOH clarified that the government needs further evidence to support the announcement of the whole country to have community transmission of the Delta variant.

On August 19, 2021, vaccine czar Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. clarified that the Philippines would continue to order China-made Sinovac, the most used Covid-19 vaccine brand (CoronaVac) in the country. Since March 2021, a total of 21,500,000 doses of the Sinovac vaccine have been delivered to the country.
